What to Do in Japan and Korea During Winter: Best Attractions & Packing Tips
I’m so excited! In just a week, I’ll be flying to Korea again! This trip was completely unexpected, but when I managed to secure a ticket to J-Hope’s Hope On Stage concert in Seoul, I knew I had to book a flight and turn it into a full winter adventure.
Winter is such a dreamy time to visit Japan and Korea, where you can enjoy snow-covered landscapes (a treat for us tropical girlies), winter festivals, and unique seasonal experiences. Whether you're into cultural traditions, outdoor activities, or the warmth of local cuisine, these two destinations have plenty to offer during the colder months. Here are some of the best things to do in Japan and Korea during winter!
My first skiing experience was in Korea's Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort! It was so hard, I decided to just lie on my back and take pics haha. |
1. Experience Unique Winter Festivals
Both Japan and Korea host spectacular winter festivals that showcase the beauty of the season. Unfortunately, some of the ones scheduled in Korea have already ended when I arrive in a week. Nonetheless, in case you're reading this post in the future, here are some ideas when you plan for your own winter adventure.
In Japan, there's the famous Sapporo Snow Festival -- a must-see event featuring stunning ice and snow sculptures, vibrant night illuminations, and exciting winter activities. Other notable festivals include the Yokote Kamakura Festival, where visitors can step inside glowing snow huts, and the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival, offering a romantic ambiance with candlelit snow installations.
I experienced the Lake Akan Ice Festival when I traveled to Hokkaido with Japan Airlines in 2019. We went at night and enjoyed ice slides, sawing blocks of ice, and sipping hot beverages. We ended the night watching fireworks over the frozen lake—still a core memory for me!
The lights were beautiful, but seeing their reflection on the frozen lake made the sight feel even more surreal--like I was in a movie |

In Korea, the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival draws visitors with its famous ice fishing experience, where travelers can try their luck at catching fresh trout. On my bucket list is the Taebaeksan Snow Festival, which showcases intricate snow sculptures, while the Garden of Morning Calm Lighting Festival turns a botanical garden into a breathtaking winter wonderland with colorful lights.

2. Enjoy Winter Sports and Outdoor Activities
For adventure seekers, Japan and Korea offer world-class skiing and snowboarding experiences. Japan’s Niseko, Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen are top choices for ski enthusiasts, boasting excellent powder snow and well-maintained slopes. In Korea, Vivaldi Park, Alpensia, and Yongpyong Resort provide fantastic skiing and snowboarding opportunities, with convenient access from Seoul.
Beyond skiing, visitors can also try ice fishing in Korea, particularly in places like Hwacheon, where the frozen rivers provide a unique fishing experience. In Japan, take a ride on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route to see the towering Snow Wall, a surreal winter attraction that amazes travelers every year.

3. Immerse Yourself in Traditional Winter Experiences
One of the best ways to stay warm during winter in Japan and Korea is by indulging in traditional hot baths. In Japan, visiting an onsen (hot spring) is a quintessential winter experience. The Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano is particularly famous for its snow monkeys, who soak in the natural hot springs to escape the cold.
In Korea, jjimjilbangs (Korean bathhouses) provide a relaxing retreat where visitors can enjoy saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths. Some popular jjimjilbangs include Dragon Hill Spa in Seoul and Sparex in Busan.

4. Indulge in Seasonal Winter Delicacies
Winter is the perfect time to savor comfort food in both countries. In Japan, warm up with a bowl of ramen, nabe (hot pot), or oden, a dish consisting of fish cakes, tofu, and daikon simmered in a flavorful broth. Yakiimo (roasted sweet potatoes) and strawberry daifuku are also popular winter treats.
In Korea, winter specialties include my fave hotteok (sweet-filled pancakes), bungeoppang (fish-shaped pastries), and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). A steaming bowl of samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) or budae jjigae (army stew) is perfect for warming up on a chilly day.
Travel Tips: What to Pack for a Winter Trip to Japan and Korea
To fully enjoy your winter adventure in Japan or Korea, packing the right essentials is key. Here are some must-have items:
Thermal Clothing: Layering is important, so pack thermal innerwear, sweaters, and insulated jackets.
Waterproof Shoes: Snowy and icy streets require warm, waterproof boots with good traction.
Gloves, Scarves, and Hats: Keeping extremities warm is essential for comfort in cold temperatures.
Hand Warmers: Disposable or rechargeable hand warmers can make outdoor activities much more enjoyable.
Moisturizer and Lip Balm: Winter air can be dry, so bring skincare essentials to prevent dryness.
Power Bank: Cold weather drains phone batteries quickly, so a power bank is handy for staying connected.
