Fan Girl's Guide: Saving for Kpop Concerts and Fangirl Travels with Maya

I have a running joke that 80% of my salary goes to my fangirling. It's always a funny icebreaker when I meet new friends at fan conventions and concerts. From the never-ending merch releases to concerts and traveling to see our idols, this lifestyle consumes not only a fan girl's time and heart but also our finances!

In reality, achieving every fan girl's dream requires a lot of patience and yup, even adulting. We might look like screaming teenagers once our faves go onstage, but the journey to get there is 100% hard work! I strive to be a responsible fan girl, often sharing online my work and side hustles to sustain both my fangirl lifestyle and our household. I want to inspire people to see this lifestyle as something attainable but with a lot of dedication and effort. In the end, fangirling has inspired me to be my best self and to live life more fully!

Sharing my realistic tips on how I save up for my next Kpop concert experience:

1. Have a Clear Goal.

As with anything, all starts with a clear goal in mind. What are your dream concerts this year? Some I have to let go so I can watch the other. Follow concert organizer pages for ticketing updates, and make sure to find out the total cost of your priority seat section, including the extra ticketing charges and taxes that most sites often exclude in published rates.

If you're traveling for a concert, include your expenses for transportation, accommodation, travel allowance, and any merchandise you might want to buy.

Having a clear goal and timeline will help you stay focused and motivated.

2. Set Aside Money in a Dedicated Savings Account.

In my years of fangirling as a 30+ year old, I've found that the "set it aside and forget it" strategy works best for me. Out of sight, out of mind! That's why I treat my Maya Savings as a dedicated stash or "digital piggy bank" for all concert-related expenses.

By parking my money in Maya Savings, I can forget about it while my savings grow with impressive interest rates of up to 15% p.a., credited daily. This high interest rate ensures that your money works harder, bringing you closer to your concert dreams faster.

FOR SHORT TERM SAVING GOALS: I use Maya's Personal Goals for a Kpop concert or Korean actor fan meeting due in the coming weeks, or maybe in a month. With this feature, you can set a specific deadline and target amount, label what it is for, contribute a portion of your income each payday, and watch your funds grow with an interest rate of 4% p.a

The best part is that you can access your money whenever you need it, offering both growth and flexibility.

Straykids just announced that Manila is part of their tour stop this year! Time to save up till November with Maya's Personal Goals feature.

FOR LONG TERM SAVING GOALS: For a big concert trip in the next 3, 6, or 12 months, I recommend Maya's Time Deposit Plus feature. This is perfect for the anticipated BTS comeback concert in 2025, once all members are released from the military. With over a year to save, Maya's Time Deposit Plus is ideal!

By locking in your BTS concert budget with this option, you can watch your savings grow steadily with interest rates of up to 6% p.a. These rates apply to savings up to P1 million per account, and you can have up to 5 different TD+ accounts. This ensures your money stays secure and grows, giving you extra cash for your concert adventures when showtime arrives.

Maya's Time Deposit Plus is perfect for long saving up goals such as next year's BTS comeback con.

When the time comes, I can also use Maya to pay for concert tickets! Its online payment capabilities make buying concert tickets online and even travel expenses (plane tickets, book of accommodation) more convenient.

3. Cut Back on Unnecessary Spending.

Here's an OG saving tip for every fangirl: Magtipid! 😂 You will find areas in your lifestyle where you can cut down expenses while saving for an upcoming concert. For example, I save up by using public transportation. Everyone who watches my Instagram Stories knows this—I still take the bus, jeep, tricycle, and trains whenever I go out, minimizing my Grab fares as much as possible. The amount I save from this will surprise you, as Grab rides from the south to my usual events often reach Php 1000!

Other ways to save include preparing meals instead of always resorting to food deliveries and finding free or low-cost entertainment options. Double-check your monthly subscriptions to see which ones you don't often use and consider unsubscribing for now.

Lastly, and this is something I also need to practice myself, haha, is to hold back on buying new merch. Just think about how the money you save by not purchasing every release from your faves can go towards your concert funds!

4. Find Additional Income Sources.

I've been practicing this tip for the longest time. I juggle multiple jobs (mostly online) to sustain my lifestyle, still making sure that I deliver quality work in all of them. However, my favorite way to earn extra cash is by holding a closet sale. It allows me to declutter items I no longer need and earn some money in the process. Plus, it's a great way to give my pre-loved items a new home and have extra money for my upcoming concert!

I still use Instagram as my online platform for closet sales, but others maximize the reach of platforms such as Shopee, Carousell, and Facebook Marketplace.
