LANTAU ISLAND DAY-TRIP: How To Go To Lantau Island, Itinerary, Etc.

If you're looking for a contrast to the bustling urban areas of the city, then a day-trip to Hong Kong's largest island is the perfect solution. It only took us around 30 minute to get to Lantau Island, including the time spent inside a picturesque cable car ride.

Here are some key features and information about Lantau Island:

Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

This cable car ride provides spectacular views of Lantau Island's coastline, mountains, and landscapes. It connects Tung Chung, near the Hong Kong International Airport, to Ngong Ping Village.

We didn't get na the glass flooring because of the price difference, but I love that we were assigned in a car with a local. She was on the way to Lantau Island to pray in the monastery. We had a good conversation, and she even took our pictures! So funny that we had a foggy view half of the time but it's okay. 😁

Ngong Ping Village

A cultural-themed village located near the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. It features traditional architecture, shops, restaurants, and attractions that offer insights into Hong Kong's history and culture.

Entrance palang we were already taking photos hehehe

We had light lunch in one of the restos. Price here is more expensive than in the city, but hey they have vegetarian nuggets! Beyond the Ngong Ping Village arch, we saw tourists taking photos of cows roaming freely through the village area.

Ngong Ping Village is designed to reflect the traditional architectural style of a Chinese village. They have a multimedia attraction called "Walking with Buddha", which uses technology to bring to life the key moments of Buddha's life story. You can also visit the traditional-style tea house to experience Chinese tea culture.

Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha)

One of the island's most famous landmarks, the Tian Tan Buddha is a 34-meter-tall bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni. It is situated near the Po Lin Monastery and Ngong Ping Village.

To reach the Tian Tan Buddha, visitors need to climb a set of stairs. These stairs lead to the statue's platform and offer a stunning view of the surrounding area. The climb can be quite challenging as there are around 268 steps to reach the top, but definitely worth it!

The Tian Tan Buddha is a representation of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, in a seated meditative pose. It symbolizes harmony, enlightenment, and the connection between humanity and the universe.

Po Lin Monastery

Founded in 1906, Po Lin Monastery is a significant Buddhist monastery known for its religious artifacts, architecture, and serene surroundings. Visitors can also enjoy vegetarian meals at the monastery's restaurant.

We were still full from our lunch, but had to check out their selections. Prices are more reasonable here.

Other places to visit when you're in Lantau Island

Cea and I were pressed with time, but here are other sites you can go to during your visit. Especially recommended if you're into outdoor sceneries and activities!

Wisdom Path

An outdoor installation featuring a series of wooden columns inscribed with the Heart Sutra. It's located close to the Big Buddha and offers a peaceful setting for contemplation.

Lantau Trail

This long-distance hiking trail encircles Lantau Island, offering various sections suitable for hikers of different skill levels. The trail provides a chance to explore the island's natural beauty, including its forests, mountains, and coastal areas.

Lantau Peak

The second-highest peak in Hong Kong, Lantau Peak offers hiking opportunities and panoramic views of the surrounding area. It's a popular spot for sunrise and sunset hikes.

Tai O Fishing Village

Known for its stilt houses and vibrant fishing culture, Tai O is a charming village located on Lantau Island's western coast. Visitors can explore the narrow streets, take boat rides, and sample local seafood.

After all the walks, we hopped back to the cable car to check out the popular outlet mall in Tung Chung.

Citygate Outlets Hong Kong

Since we're already in the area, Cea and I spent the rest of our afternoon at the Citygate Outlets. It is known for being one of Hong Kong's largest outlet malls, offering a wide range of discounted branded and designer goods.

Tea break + Cea was able to score a bag at a good deal!

How To Get To Lantau Island

To get to Lantau Island in Hong Kong, take the MTR to Tung Chung Station.

We booked a Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car ride in advance via Klook to avoid the long lines.

Remember to check the latest schedules and transportation options, as they may vary due to factors like weather conditions, maintenance, or special events. Additionally, if you plan to use the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, consider booking tickets in advance to avoid long wait times, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Skipping the long lines like a boss thanks to Klook's advance pass!
